Jo Laing is a counseling intern at Transcending Adversity Counseling Services under the supervision of Jasmine Griffin, LPC. Jo graduated from George Mason University in 2019 with their MFA in Poetry and is currently completing the final year of their MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. As a queer, non-binary, and trans provider, they are deeply invested in deconstructing and renavigating personal, relational, and societal structures to promote awareness and healthy functioning, while also acknowledging the ways in which discrimination, social stigma, and oppression affect mental and physical health, especially for LGBTQ+ people. They have a strong background in storytelling, narrative, and creative expression, and often incorporate their love of myths, archetypes, and metaphors into their work.

Jo considers themself a relationship enthusiast and is always looking for ways to facilitate understanding and collaboration in the pursuit of building strong communities based on a foundation of care, respect, and joyful authentic expression. They value accountability, sincerity, and curiosity, and are passionate about the ways in which play, mindfulness, and body work can help with nervous system regulation and increased resiliency. If you are someone who is seeking assistance in navigating your sexual or gender identity, developing strong relational skills, or navigating daily stressors, they are here to help! Jo is very excited to support Side by Side in assisting Virginia’s LGBTQ+ youth and families in building a strong and thriving community where we are all seen and celebrated.
